Give
Philosophy
Thanks for checking out Taproot’s philosophy on money and giving. If you are not currently a member of this church or committed to the mission that we have been called to then the last thing we want is your money. God is the owner of all things, including the Benjamins or Washingtons in our wallets. In light of this truth He needs nothing, but instead gives to all and requires them to be wise stewards of His gifts. At Taproot part of the missionaries stewardship of God’s money is to financially support the mission that he or she is involved in. This is only for the folks who are firmly convinced of their call to this fellowship and committed to fulfilling it’s vision.
Here at Taproot we do not take a formal “tithe”. We are convinced that the New Testament does not require a formal tithe as the Old Testament did of the nation of Israel. Instead as you read the words of Jesus and the Apostle Paul the New Testament teaches Christians that where there treasure is so will their heart be. The principle of giving for the Christian ought to be one of regular, intentional, sacrificial, joyful giving. It’s not the amount necessarily that God is about but instead the heart of the giver that He is after.
In Mark 12 Jesus watched a little old lady give two copper coins (pennies) for her offering one morning and turned to His disciples and explained that she had given more than all the others who were dropping their hundreds and thousands of dollars in the box because she gave all she had. The old lady didn’t give out of her excess but out of her poverty thus proving her dependence on God, removing ostentation, and setting the example for all believers after her.
Paul would say in 2 Cor 8 and 9 that we are to give joyfully even hilariously. For the Christian it is a joy to set up treasures for him or herself in heaven where neither rust nor moth can ever take away. There is to be a regular, intentional giving on behalf of the believer for the health of his or her heart. As we give we are overjoyed with the truth that God is glorified and given to others through our sacrificial hearts.
