The Coming Evangelical Collapse
March 10, 2009 | 7 comments
JasonI guess I’ve had some sobering posts lately, but for those who are interested I think it’s very important stuff to think about. This commentary entitled “The Coming Evangelical Collapse” was posted by a guy I respect very much, Michael Spencer (he is also known as the Internet Monk and runs a phenomenal blog).
Please read it and comment, but here are a few exerpts to whet your appetite:
“Evangelicalism doesn’t need a bailout. Much of it needs a funeral.”
“Despite all of these challenges, it is impossible not to be hopeful. As one commenter has already said, ‘Christianity loves a crumbling empire.’ ”
And here is a glimpse of his cold-eyed level-headedness that I love:
“I’m not a prophet. My view of evangelicalism is not authoritative or infallible. I am certainly wrong in some of these predictions. But is there anyone who is observing evangelicalism in these times who does not sense that the future of our movement holds many dangers and much potential?”

Jessica DesLongchampMan, I’m sitting here at my desk at work on my lunch and I’m making my way through the Christian Science Monitor article you linked to and I keep feeling the urge to cry.
During one paragraph the urge might come from an overwhelming sense of mourning taking in Spencer’s perspective on what we’ve “done wrong” — that is tough stuff.
But in the next paragraph the urge might come from a totally different feeling of the imensity and greatness of our King and the glory of his vieled plan.
In the end, my lunch is over and I just wanted to say that I appreciate the post and Spencer’s article, not as “truth” but as very thought provoking. I think the main point I’ll take away is from this quote:
“The evangelical investment in moral, social, and political issues has depleted our resources and exposed our weaknesses…. We fell for the trap of believing in a cause more than a faith.”
What a scary idea.
On a lighter note, I think I’ve also learned that I should hit skip on my Ipod the next time I’m reading something so intense and Cake’s song “Comfort Eagle” starts to play… too creepy.
If you know the song you’ll understand.

Bryan CathermanMicheal Spencer has prompted an interesting conversation that seems to be playing out all over the Internet.
Mark Galli, Managing Editor of Christianity Today has offered his thoughts to the discussion. While I think both make good observations (and some that are a bit of a stretch), Mark’s closing two paragraphs shed some light on how Christians (calling themselves Evangelicals or not) should approach these ideas.
