Was Jesus Republican or Democrat?

In an election year I think this is an appropriate question. Each party seems to engage the communities of faith with such a barrage of religious rhetoric that one would have to be convinced that Jesus is up in heaven with a big red elephant flag waving over His throne or the donkey He made His triumphal entry on was actually blue. I jest in light of a systemic problem that Christianity faces in it’s contemporary state. While in rural, gun toting, conservative Idaho I heard numerous proclamations of Christ’s allegiance to the right wing agenda. Now living in urban, squirrel loving, liberal Washington I have heard over and over how Jesus’ compassion and social justice are reflected perfectly in the Democratic revolution. Here’s the point we must politically ponder while maneuvering through the quagmire of partisanship while loving the King of Kings. I find that His title is the key. He is King of Kings! His Kingdom is not of this world and neither are we. Before your feathers ruffle and you start commenting on your discovery of the anti-christ and his red or blue coloring, I am not saying we should be reclusive or ignorant or not involved. I am saying we should never attach to our temporal ideologies the full blown endorsement of our eternal God. Democrat or Republican; we as Christians must recognize that we are praying for His Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. With that said, do your homework on our candidates, remember that the sovereign God of the universe will put into leadership exactly who He wants and one day we will all be wearing white, clothed in His gracious righteousness for eternity, dwelling in an eternal Kingdom worshipping Him together.

The Discussion

It is good to know that we can simply live for Jesus and know that He is in complete control; is it not? I think It’s so easy to get caught up in all of the wacky stuff that goes on in our political system and just be burdened by it. One of the most frustrating things I find with politics is the lack of unity in our “United States.” Isn’t it hard to be united as a nation when all we see on T.V. is that the democrats and republicans can’t even get along? I do think it is possible, even maybe in Idaho, for both parties to get along.I think you are right Danny, it’s for us to do our homework and truly be educated on the persons we have the option to vote for. All in all it is about Jesus and His kingdom come!

After a thorough analysis of the four gospels I have determined that Jesus was actually a Libertarian.

Ok, ha ha, just kidding. But seriously, over the years I have found myself on both ends of the political spectrum, and now I have come to resolve in an uncomfortable distrust of the kingdom of this world. But I think the key is recognizing and accepting that neither the Republican or Democratic agenda, no matter how moral we perceive it to be, is God’s plan for this world. God is not honored if the only reason a woman doesn’t obtain an abortion is that there is a human law against it. God is not honored when people’s money is involuntarily confiscated and then given to someone who may or may not need it, who may or may not be gaming the system. When I look at my vote through that lens, it makes me lighten up a little more about the whole thing, knowing that God is in control and it is the church, through Christ, that advances His kingdom.

That is the key! The church, through Christ, that advances the kingdom. The church, which has in large taken a back seat, is to be leading the nation. We are to be an educated people who know what we believe and why it brings glory to Jesus.

Libertarian? That sounds about right. (kidding)
